Brought this book for my 9 year old as she is learning Scratch at school. As a programmer myself, I found the book teaches children the very basic foundations of computer programming (from variables to loops) with fun, easy to follow tutorials without all of the boring theory behind it. What really caught my niece's attention was the chapter on games. Once she had read that chapter she was well away creating her own games. The book itself is hardback and is spiral bound. So it can take a tumble or widthstand the manhandling it will be subjected to. Overall this book is a great staring point for kids.

I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about coding because quite simply I don't. However my 8 year old is always telling me about coding and so when we bought her a laptop for Christmas I wanted to get her something that wasn't minecraft. The book itself appears hard wearing and is spiral bound for ease of use. The pages are colourful and informative and easy to follow without being too simple. She opened the book and within minutes she had got herself hooked and was coding games inside an hour. By the time her father was home she was teaching him! Gets my vote and I would recommend to others!

This book is just the best to start with. I've bought it for my Y1 son. It was a bit boring for him, but I really liked it and it gave me ideas how can I get him into ICT coding. Only one thing was missing. I think if there would be some bigger size sort of flash cards shaped and printed as the basic commands, would be just fantastic and would well deserve 5 stars and must have.

My 9 year old son has loved using this book, he found it easy to follow and had coded some brilliant games. He spent a whole day with it one weekend and was so proud of his work.

I have been trying for ages to get my 7 year old to play around with the Scratch programming language. After reading 'Lift-the-Flap Computers', one page of which shows a small Scratch program, he finally showed interest. I bought this book to follow on from the theory of the Flap book so he can get his hands dirty in a more practical way. So far so good.

The main problem is that the book is no longer current. You find that the menus have changed and bits of the code aren't there anymore! Rather frustrating as I wanted to learn step-by-step and am having to improvise a lot. I think my 8 year old will find it irritating to be honest.

What an excellent resource! My son (9) wants to be a secret agent so I thought why not get him into coding nice and early? Scratch is a very user-friendly system and hopefully, it will challenge his thinking as he has only just started using it but already experimenting with altering the programmes slightly, using different commands. To be honest, I'm not sure who's enjoying it more, the child or the grown up.

Amazing intro to Scratch for kids. Saved $100 on an after school program teaching the same thing. They can work on their own pace.

Bought for my niece, she loved it and made few programs but lost interest soon after. Not sure if from lack of interest or the way it is written But it is a good book for beginners
