Life in the UK

Being a British citizen doesn't mean you have to lose your own identity. There will, however, be things about life in the UK that you should know about before you become a citizen.

That's why the Life in the UK Test has been introduced. Studying for and taking the test will give you the practical knowledge you need to live in this country and to take part in society.
The test contains 24 questions on life in the United Kingdom and will last for 45 minutes. It's based on chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the handbook 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship', which you can buy from the Stationery Office and large book stores.

Don't worry if you don't pass the test the first time that you try it; you can try again when you feel ready. There's no limit to the number of times you can take the test.

  • Computer Gym holds tests on Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week.
  • Call us on 0844 800 8885 to arrange an appointment.
  • It costs £34 which should be brought to us and paid with cash or a cheque with a guarantee card.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your test time to allow for registration and payment.
  • A statement of your result will be printed off for you 15 minutes after the end of the testing session.
  • More details can be found on the British Citizenship website: www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk

The Life in the UK Test has been carefully tried out and tested by volunteers.
Here's what they had to say about their experience of taking the test:

  • "I've never used a computer before, but found it quite easy – it was always clear what to do."
  • "The test wasn't as hard to use or as stressful as I expected, and I finished well before the time was up."
  • "The staff at the test centre were really friendly and made me feel less nervous about taking the test."
